Anwendungsszenario ORDO veröffentlicht SMILA 0.7
11. 05. 2010Theseus News
Leipziger Semantic Web Days 2010
01. 04. 2010
I just got the invitation for this years semantic web days in Leipzig and wanted to let you know that they have done a wonderful job at getting an interesting mix of technical speakers and business/industry/government use-case presentations.
The eccenca team will be present as well and will provide a short presentation of its vision of how the Eclipse.org project SMILA (semantic information logistics architecture) will fill the gap between the semantic web and today's enterprise IT infrastructure.
General information on the event including registration can be found at: http://aksw.org/LSWT The eccenca/SMILA presentation will take place on Mai 6th at 11:45 am.
I will be there for the evening session on the 5th and would like to invite everyone to participate in a discussion of how semantic technology can become a key success factor to the enterprise. Every reasonable suggestion will automatically result in an invitation to have a few beers with me;-)
Looking forward to seeing you there,

Introducing the eccenca desktop search client eDiscoverer
19. 02. 2010
We are proud to introduce the all new desktop search client from eccenca.
At a first glance eccenca Discoverer is just another desktop search. So why should the eDiscoverer boost your productivity in comparison to existing systems?
The eDiscoverer features a superior fault-tolerant search and indexing technology. Besides it enables users to quickly find and review documents from remote severs. Companies usually don't allow desktop search engines to index fileshares over the network as the resulting increase in traffic has been linked to network break down. But how are we supposed to quickly find important documents on remote servers without being able to index network drives?
eDiscoverer has the ability to seamlessly connect to eccenca server engines. These are directly placed on central file- or groupware-servers to avoid network traffic during indexing. Lightning fast document preview functions assure instant gratification and improved "findability" with eccenca - no matter if documents are stored locally or on a remote server.

Sam Chapman of K-Now on Semantic Challenges
14. 01. 2009I have been discussing progress in semantic knowledge structures with Entrepreneur and Researcher Sam Chapman of K-Now who has recently left the University of Sheffield, Department of Computer Science, in the United Kingdom to go full-time into the delivery of semantic technologies in the enterprise. His attendance at the ISWC 2008 has created some momentum to engage new corporations in a discussion on a recently presented paper on "Creating and Using Organisational Semantic Webs in Large Networked Organisations" by Ravish Bhagdev, Ajay Chakravarthy, Sam Chapman, Fabio Ciravegna and Vita Lanfranchi. Knowledge management has shifted as evidenced in his paper. He contends with others that a more localized approach based on a particular perspective of the world in which one operates is far more useful than a centralized company view. All-encompassing ontologies are not the answer, according to Chapman. In the paper, his team indicates:
A challenge for the Semantic Web is to support the change in knowledge management mentioned above, by defining tools and techniques supporting: 1) definition of community-specific views of the world; 2) capture and acquisition of knowledge according to them; 3) integration of captured knowledge with the rest of the organisation's knowledge; 4) sharing of knowledge across communities.

Guest-post: George Everitt on Extracting Meaning from Text, Paris Hilton, Cellos and Librarians
03. 11. 2008Humans are classification machines. We love to categorize and segment our lives into neat little piles. Have you ever sighed in joy after finally getting around to cleaning up that cluttered garage? There are even games where the object is to build order from disorder. We solve Rubik's cubes and prune our shrubs and pick up our socks and put them in the hamper. As the father of two boys, I'm generalizing of course.
People are much better at seeing semantic relationships than any machine. We can tell latte from onion rings. We know how Paris Hilton is related to Larry King. We understand the concept and purpose of underpants. Despite decades of research, and many, many smart person-hours dedicated to cracking that nut, computers still have no clue.

}}} eccenca - The Semantic Enterprise Platform
29. 05. 2009
Today we have launched our long awaited eccenca.com website and the first BETA version of the soon to come commercial eccenca product.
The circumstances of this launch are peculiar in many ways. The most disappointing being that some of those who have helped us in defining the vision of eccenca are no longer part of our team. When celebrating the site and product launch today, we want to thank those who have given us support or have directly contributed during the long implementation cycle.
What is the right time to come out with a product? How feature rich and functionally complete must it be to get the desired response in the market?
If you have been involved with the development of any piece of software you must know, that at this point we have more ideas of what to do next than ever before. -

The Open Source Initiative SMILA Continues to Gain Momentum Globally
28. 01. 2009

Attensity and living-e - Two Powerful Partners Join SMILA
The Open Source Initiative, SMILA "SeMantic Information Logistics Architecture", was mutually launched at the end of 2007 by brox IT Solutions GmbH, the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) and empolis to create a standardized infrastructure for information management. The "eclipse Foundation" was chosen as a platform for the initiative. The eclipse community consists of more than 180 companies and research institutions, as well as countless private users worldwide, which all have the common objective of developing open and standardized platforms. Since June 2008, SMILA attained the status of an official eclipse project http://www.eclipse.org/smila/ and is co-funded through the THESEUS project by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi).

Aperture project changes License to render possible better Use within SMILA Project
28. 11. 2008This morning the development-team of SMILA recieved the good news right before weekend via Leo Sauermann of german "DFKI" (german research center for artificial intelligence). DFKI just recently joined the Eclipse Foundation to support SMILA. Today's Announcement sounded like this within Leo's email:
Hi SMILA,
As of yesterday, we have changed the license of the Aperture project to BSD.

Ed Merks and Ian Skerrett: Eclipse Members Meeting
21. 11. 2008Ed Merks' remarks can be found over here. This is his takeaway about SMILA:
"The integration of disparate sources of information across the enterprise is key issue to many. The same information can be interpreted in different ways and often separate sources of information need to be related as if they originated from a uniform semantic source. The SMILA approach is focused on this. The idea is to create a shared architecture standard.

Explore Workable Frameworks for Logistics with Open Source: SAP Will
28. 10. 2008In July 2008, a number of large corporations in information technology spaces, began to take an interest in the SMILA (SeMantic Information Logistics Architecture) project, including SAP. A successful presentation was made to SAP on SMILA, for SAP support and involvement. This was achieved. Let's remember that the primary purpose of SMILA is to provide a development framework that is accessible by all developers and reduces the investment risk for all companies in this. With an open source solution worldwide, there is a basis to build momentum for this initiative to be a standard. This constructs the inroads for semantic applications in every industry. The first mission under SMILA is to create sample implementations of a workable information logistics framework. Next generation semantic information systems must count on a framework being available to really ground themselves in industry excellence, stability, and scalability.

Anwendungsszenario ORDO veröffentlicht SMILA 0.7
11. 05. 2010Theseus News

Want to see and hear something scary?
19. 08. 2009I have just come back from a few days of vacation during the course of which I have finally been able to catch up with some reading.
One of the most exciting and to some degree scary things I have come across was a video published by the Knowledge Media Institute (KMi).
I found this video on the website of John Dominique. John is the President of STI International a global organization with members in Europe, North America, and Asia with a mission to "make semantics real".
Future Internet from KMi on Vimeo.
Let's think about this video and its message for a moment... How do you feel about STis Vision of the future? Please feel free to comment ;-)

Every reasonable suggestion will automatically result in an invitation to have a few beers with me;-)
Looking forward to seeing you there,
Chris Brockmann -

Search Engine Meeting in Boston
22. 05. 2009A good old German proverb is: "Better late than never!" and I would like to ask you to apply this notion to this delayed posting of my fifty cents about the Boston event.
Before going into some details about interesting people I have met during the conference I want to salute Harry Collier and his team for having managed to once again make these three days very special to all of us. What I found particularly charming about the event was what I would like to call a constructive openness. Even though most of us present could be considered competitors, the atmosphere was filled with a free flow of ideas, sharing of best practices and constructive discussions.
Here is a link to the agenda and online versions of the presentations. (Infonortics Agenda) For those who could not make it this is a wonderful way of sharing at least some of the good stuff that was presented. -
Ed Merks and Ian Skerrett: Eclipse Members Meeting
21. 11. 2008Ed Merks' remarks can be found over here.

Ever wonder why people invest money into Open Source projects?
29. 08. 2009
Stefan Wess of Attensity Group published an article that describes Attensity Empolis long road to finally deciding to invest into Open Source and to initiate SMILA base on that decision.
This is even more astonishing we taking into consideration, that Attensity Group with more than 500 enterprise clients is one of the worlds leading providers of information logistics solutions. If anyone could ever have economies of scale in reinventing the wheel for information logistics, then Attensity Group would definitely be it.
