eccenca Enterprise Edition (EE) is an enterprise-level, semantic, information logistics architecture. It is built around the standards-based Eclipse SMILA project originally contributed by brox. It provides all the components required for the design, deployment, and management of next generation semantic information processes. Entry level application scenarios may start with low complexity but high volume search applications will require configuration management, multiple specialized semantic and linguistic data processing components, advanced search technologies and query pre-processing and post-processing.
Scalability
Virtually unlimited scalability is achieved through clustering of both the BPEL process engine and back-end database used for continuous, transactional process instances. Through advanced load-balancing and passivation/activation techniques, eccenca EE can be deployed on multiple servers for large data pools.
Reliability
The advantage for eccenca is the fact that it is based on the open source project SMILA which is being developed at Eclipse.org. The disadvantage of open source code is that often the high-end functionality required for enterprise-wide applications and platform development is not available, and support is severely limited. Open source code is often untested for all possible application scenarios therefore you may be on your own in the development cycle of what you are trying to do.
The eccenca community edition takes the next step in offering some robust functionality, however for truly enterprise level deployment across departments, we know that production support SLAs will be needed. We designed the eccenca enterprise edition accordingly. For eccenca EE distribution our company has tested and backs software components that we consider to provide the best value and reliability - for some SMILA or eccenca CE components these warranties may mean that we decide to partly rely on closed source commercial components. By combining the benefits of open source without neglegting truly superior closed source components we are able to provide our customers with enterprise class SLAs for eccenca EE at affordable prices.

This is why we have implemented functions that insure that not a single document will be lost or jammed within the extraction, transformation and indexing process. The data processing is designed to work in server clusters that route processing jobs to available CPUs. The monitoring functions provide valuable feedback on individual processing/tagging steps with transaction support. Transparancy and dependability make eccenca EE your best choice.
Example:
If for instance a certain tagging algorithm did not work on any number of documents, the data persistence layer will allow you to re-apply this one process step on exactly those documents that were previously missed, without causing any additional processing overhead. In traditional style implementations you would either not notice lost documents or would have to reprocess all failed documents from scratch. We understand that this might be an acceptable option within projects with less than a million documents. In larger scale projects redundant reprocessing steps become unacceptable.

For upgrading, patching and tweaking such scenarios require what we call "hot pluggeability". The OSGi component model in combination with our advanced configuration management functions allows the administrator to load and distribute new components within the cluster without having to restart the application.
